Electron Microscopes

TEM: The JEOL TEM1230 provides high resolution imaging and for digital image aquisition is equipped with a Gatan 967 slow-scan, cooled CCD camera. More information at:

Jeol TEM1230

SEM: The Hitachi S-3400N variable pressure SEM is equiped with a tungsten filament and secondary and back-scattered electron detectors. More information at:

Hitachi S-3400N VP-SEM

The microscopes are available for independent use on an hourly fee basis. CSIF provides in-house training on the operation of all its microscopes and equipment and can provide assistance with post-collection processing of data and images.

Fees for training and individual use of electron microscopes and computers as well as a description of available electron microscopy services can be found on the CSIF-EMC services and pricing page.

Equipment

The CSIF-EMC has all the necessary equipment for preparation of samples for standard morphological, structural, and immunohistochemical examination using transmission or scanning electron microscopy.

In addition the EMC has specialized equipment for cryopreparation and freeze substitution of samples as well as a cryo-ultramicrotome for the production of frozen hydrated sections that are ideal for immunolocalization.

The following is a list of major equipment availible for use in the CSIF-EMC:

Fees for training and individual use of equipment can be found on the CSIF-EMC services and pricing page.

Computers

All of the microscopes in the CSIF are interfaced with computers for the collection of digital images. Each EM has a dedicated computer (PCs running Windows XP) that runs the proprietary software program appropriate for control of the microscope and image aquisition. The EMC also has an image processing computer (PC running Windows XP) which has a copy of the proprietary imaging software, as well as Quartz PCI, installed. This processing work station can be used independently of the acquisition/microscope system for post-collection analysis.

Ink Jet printing

The EMC has available an Epson 1280 color ink jet print. This printer is suitable for making good quality prints, at $2.00/print.

Your lab must have a current SU-13 on file to print.
